Is the daily routine taking a toll, and you feel stuck in a rut? Do yourself a favor and head to the mountains to breathe in the fresh air, unplug from the daily stresses and enjoy listening to the rhythms of nature. Whether or not you’re looking to have coffee on the back deck overlooking the mountain scene, fish in the nearest stream, or take a few nature hikes to incredible views and waterfalls. Escaping to the mountains will be an ideal getaway for you.
So, where is this tranquil place?
Situated at the base of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in Tennessee is a town called Gatlinburg. Last year in 2021, Gatlinburg hit record-breaking numbers of people visiting the city and surrounding areas. Over 14 million people visited, and there is a reason for it. Gatlinburg offers many unique experiences that every age group can enjoy. For those who love to be in nature, you can enjoy the many moderate hiking trails throughout the Smoky Mountains, all in proximity. Those looking to hit the shops can take their time walking the town’s streets. Also, there are many attractions, dinner shows, and entertainment shows that the whole family can enjoy.
So, why would I suggest venturing to such a place that brings in the crowds when the purpose was to find tranquility in nature? Although this small Bavarian village packs the crowds during peak season, what about the shoulder and off-seasons?
Best Time To Visit
September- October is considered the best time to visit Gatlinburg. You are shouldering off of peak season, allowing you to have slightly less crowded areas. However, Gatlinburg is a year-round destination, and during this time, many will head to the location, especially in October. The mild temperatures and fall foliage coming to its peak with pops of yellows, reds, and orange leaves give viewers, photographers, and hikers ideal backgrounds when enjoying their time in the mountains.
January- March is the true off-season where you will see fewer crowds then you will throughout the year. Just note that some trails, seasonal roads and attractions will be closed for the winter season. With all that in mind, it brings comfort to warming up next to a fire’s glow while watching the snowfall outside—an ideal time when just needing to get away for a change in scenery.
If you want relaxation, the times to avoid the area are during Gatlinburg’s peak season, which is in June, July, August, and December due to their Christmas displays and shows.
Things to do during the non-peak seasons
The shoulder and off-season is the best time to rent a cabin high above the town and relax on the porch overlooking the picturesque views with an excellent book in your hands. Some cabin rentals include a nice indulging hot tub which is a plus when needing to relax from the daily grind. If you plan your getaway during September and early October, taking your fishing pole down to the Pigeon River or any nearby streams offers a lovely afternoon to catch some fish solo or as a group outing. This time of the year is also the best time to visit one of the most visited National Parks in the country, with countless trails and views. Below are some additional attractions and activities offered during the non-peak seasons.
- Anakeesta: high upon the mountaintop sits Anakeesta, which is a family fun theme park and home to many restaurants, desserts shops, and attractions for all ages. To get there, you will get the opportunity to soar above the trees in a ski lift chair or opt for a gondola ride. Once reaching the top, the options are endless for exploring. The ticket price includes a walk through the tree canopies on suspended bridges, feasting your eyes on the gorgeous vista views on top of AnaVista Tower, and walking through the villages. Grab a drink, head to one of the contained fire pits throughout the park. For dining, many restaurants in the area have a great vantage point overlooking the Smoky Mountains. However, I recommend checking out Cliff Top Restaurant. Just save room for dessert at Pearl’s Pie in the Sky for later. If you want to take your adventure to the next level, you can add on a mountain coaster ride and or ziplining through the tree canopies at an additional cost.
- Hiking Trails: Throughout the National Park, there are 150 trails that range in level difficulties. These beautiful trails take you through wooded forested areas to stunning views under a plunging waterfall to high above the world at the summit of some of the highest peaks in the Appalachian Mountain Range. Regardless of which trail you choose, always practice the Leave No Trace Policy and visit the National Park Service page to see any restrictions or trail closures. To read more on the trails’ practices, visit A Guide For Hiking In The Spring Season blog.
- Ober Gatlinburg: Take the picturesque aerial tram to the top of the mountain and experience the fall and winter activities offered. During the fall season, guests can partake in the mountain coaster, rock walls, and miniature golf. For the winter season, Ober Gatlinburg offers travelers options of skiing, sledding, ice skating, snow tubing, and ice bumper cars, bringing enjoyment to kids and families.
- Ski Clingman’s Dome Road: Once seasonal roads in the mountains close down for the winter, one of the more famous roads that lead up to the highest manufactured point in the Appalachian Mountain range attracts skier enthusiasts. Throughout the winter season, cross country skiers race to the winter wonderland of the Smoky Mountains to venture down the Clingman’s Dome Road. If you plan on traveling during January-March and this activity seems up your alley be sure to check it out!
- Trolley ride: Experience Gatlinburg in a whole new light while taking a winter wonderland trolley ride throughout the village. Explore the magic in all the sites, sounds, and light decorations for the season’s festivities.
